This project aims to develop a curriculum of passive and active music-making activities for training dementia care and social workers and informal carers, and an original music-based non-pharmacological intervention to improve behaviour, mood and quality of life. life of older people with dementia and delay as much as possible further decline in cognitive function. This educational program responds to several needs: those of dementia care professionals, who seek more effective methods and techniques to deal with dementia patients, and of the latter to be heard and understood, to communicate through a universal language, to maintain residual cognitive abilities, and to improve their quality of life. Other SOUND targets are informal carers, who need to continue training and acquire new skills to better manage their loved ones in everyday life, and the wider community, which can be more easily sensitized and educated to accept and interact with patients with dementia.

what does he want to achieve

SOUND aims to improve the behaviour, mood and quality of life of elderly people living with dementia and to preserve residual cognitive functions for as long as possible, including memory, through musical activities in a circle (Circleactivities). To achieve it, musicians, healthcare professionals and researchers will design:

a) a training curriculum aimed at health professionals and informal caregivers (mostly family members) on the use of musical activities adapted to the specific needs of the target audience;

b) an intervention protocol for elderly people with dementia and informal caregivers based on Circle Activities that will be tested with the elderly;

c) a digital platform for cooperative learning, for use by health and social workers, the elderly and informal caregivers;

d) a European awareness campaign based on the musical performances performed and recorded during the intervention with the elderly people and with the young students of the music schools involved in the project, with the aim of contributing to the education of dementia-friendly communities.
